Ascension Day Benin will take place on May 13, 2021. Ascension Day is a public holiday in Germany, Switzerland, Austria as well as Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greenland, Haiti, Indonesia, Iceland, Colombia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Namibia, the Netherlands and Norway. In Italy (Ascensione), Poland and Hungary, the festival was abolished as a public holiday a few years ago and is now celebrated in church on the following Sunday.
Ascension Day has been a public holiday in Germany since 1936. In the GDR, the day was only a public holiday until 1966 and in 1990. In the secular area, the public holiday in Germany became Father’s Day, also known as Men’s Day or Men’s Day. On this day there are customs such as the gentlemen’s party (a carriage ride or hike in nature with consumption of alcohol) or day trips with the whole family. In addition, the Charlemagne Prize is awarded annually on Ascension Day in Aachen.
The Ascension of Christ (in Switzerland: Ascension) describes the belief in the return of Jesus of Nazareth as Son of God to his Father in heaven and at the same time a Christian holiday or a Catholic solemn festival. Ascension Day is celebrated on the 40th day after Easter Sunday, whereby, as was customary in the old days, Easter Sunday and Ascension day itself are both included. That is why the festival always falls on a Thursday. The earliest date is April 30; the latest date of June 3rd. (Source: Wikipedia, License: GNU FDL)
