A curious holiday as an ode to the brown bean and caffeine
As already stated on Coffee Day in the world , the caffeinated broth is the many peoples’ favorite drink. Surveys have shown that around 160 liters per capita are consumed over the year and that 86 percent of all adults drink coffee at least once a day during the week (see also the article on the American Coffee Break Day Day) on January 20th).
This puts the coffee ahead of the water and beer. Seen around the world, the Germans are very much in vogue, because around 400 billion cups of coffee are drunk around the globe every year, which makes the brown bean the second most widely used raw material after oil.
International Coffee Day takes these figures into account in that this October 1st is all about the necessity of fair trade coffee and wants to raise public awareness of the working conditions of coffee farmers. In addition, of course, many local shops and suppliers use it Today’s day of action also for running special marketing campaigns (e.g. by giving away free coffee or discount campaigns).
Who started International Coffee Day?
While the origins of the Day of Coffee in Germany are relatively clear and well documented, at least with regard to its initiators and the first year of its celebration, the international variant looked a little different for a long time, i.e. less clear. In the following a sketch of the framework points of this history of the development of the International Coffee Day:
- From today’s perspective, it can be assumed that the name International Coffee Day goes back to the US National Coffee Day from 2005. This event falls on September 29th in the United States and is used primarily by the country’s major diner and fast food chains to distribute free coffee to their customers.
- This National Coffee Day is still celebrated in this way today, only that it is now under the International Coffee Day label. Although it is not entirely clear why the decision was made for the date of September 29th (for a similar situation see also the thematically related day of espresso (English. National Espresso Day) on November 23rd), one can at least understand when this name first appeared.
- Namely during a press conference of the American Southern Food and Beverage Museum on October 3, 2009 on the occasion of the first International Coffee Day and the announcement of the first New Orleans Coffee Festival. It doesn’t quite match the original date of September 29th, but at least it seems to be securitized.
- In 2015, the London-based International Coffee Organization came to the conclusion that it was time to set a date for an international coffee day and, accordingly, today’s October 1st was set as the date (see also the list of related links below )
Various International Coffee Days
In parallel to the world and the countries listed above, national campaign days for all things coffee are celebrated in the following countries on different calendar days (for details, see the calendar of the coffee holidays ):

No matter where you are or which coffee you prefer: The best and, in my opinion, most appropriate way of celebrating this international coffee day is to drink a cup of freshly brewed coffee. And if you want, it can with the equally committed today, October 1 World Music Day (Engl. International Music Day), World Vegetarian Day (Engl. World Vegetarian Day) or the US Day of the CD player (Engl. National CD Player Day ) combine.
