International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia will take place on May 17, 2021. Known worldwide as “International Day Against Homophobia” (IDAHO), it has been celebrated on May 17th every year since 2005. The initiative for the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia came from Louis-George Tin, who today heads the French section of the International Lesbian and Gay Association.
The aim of the day was from the beginning to coordinate international activities and to demand respect for lesbians and gays. The date was chosen to commemorate May 17, 1990, the day the World Health Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from its diagnosis code.
At the same time, there are random parallels between the date 17.5. and the former Section 175 of the Criminal Code (which made sexual acts between men of the sexes a criminal offense), which is why May 17th was popularly referred to as the “gay holiday” even before 1990.
