Already knew? The May 20 is celebrated worldwide as a day of weights and measures (Weights and Measures Day). This date recalls the founding of the French Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) in 1875. Accordingly, this article from the calendar of curious holidays from all over the world is intended to tell his story. What happened?
Why does Weights and Measures Day fall on May 20th?
Anyone who has ever dealt with the subject of weights and measures will sooner or later come across the now celebrated French Bureau International des Poids et Mesures, which is called the International Office for Weights and Measures (IBMG).
And although it is not 100% clear afterwards by whom exactly this Day of Honor of Weights and Measures was launched and since when it has been celebrated, it can at least be clearly shown that the choice of date relates to the establishment of the BIPM, which together was initiated with the (international) meter convention on May 20, 1875.
A historical look back: BIPM was founded and the meter convention was introduced on May 20, 1875
This organization was founded under the supervision of the Conférence Générale des Poids et Mesures (CGPM) (German General Conference for Weights and Measures) with the aim of creating a uniform and above all unambiguous system of measures and weights worldwide based on the international standard system.
So if you have ever wondered how a meter or a kilogram came about, you will surely find what you are looking for at the institute located in Sèvres, France.
At this point, of course, many thanks to Benny and Elmar from aerobis.com, who made the weights available to me.
In this sense: Have a great and relaxed Weights and Measures Day to all of you.
