On closer inspection of the available sources, however, the inconclusive research is surprising. Because a look at the available material quickly makes it clear that with the food blogger John-Bryan Hopkins a real authority in matters of food holidays as the initiator of the National Vanilla Pudding Day is moving into focus.
Since 2005/2006, Alabama-born Hopkins has launched numerous culinary holidays of his own, which he has been collecting on his blog foodimentary.com since 2010 (see also the articles by Diana Ransom on slate.com, Doug Criss on cnn.com and Conor Dougherty on nytimes.com).
The earliest version of National Custard Day at Hopkins dates back to May 22, 2012, although it is not entirely clear whether this is actually the first edition of this culinary occasion. At least the data from Google Trends refer in this regard to May 2010, when the search term National Vanilla Pudding Day generated the first relevant interest in organic search (see also the list of related links below).
Why does National Custard Day fall on May 22nd in the United States?
In contrast, Hopkins’ article on foodimentary.com does not provide any indication as to why US National Custard Day falls on May 22nd of all places. Rather, the food blogger has pointed out in several interviews that the occasions on his culinary calendar are placed either according to seasonal reference or the existing gaps in the events he has researched. At the start of foodimentary.com, for example, he was only able to find 200 well-known food holidays and filled the remaining dates with his own holidays (see also the list of related links below).
Against this background, a relatively arbitrary calendar setting can also be assumed in the case of National Vanilla Pudding Day.
At least in the course of the research for the present article, I could neither identify a specific reference nor a source to be taken seriously. But maybe there is actually a secret connection to the day of the swimming champions in Germany, which is celebrated parallel on May 22nd , the World Goth Day , the International Sherlock Holmes Day or the American Day of the Toothpaste Tube Day or the National Toothpaste Tube Day. the purchase an instrument tag (engl. Why is the pudding actually called pudding?
As always, if the background information is missing, it is wise as an author to limit yourself to the facts available. First of all, it should be emphasized that the term pudding in the German-speaking and Anglo-American language areas means two very different dishes. While in our latitudes the pudding is served primarily as a sweet dish and dessert – it is not for nothing that professional chefs tend to speak of dessert cream, especially in Great Britain the term pudding is a meat dish (see also the articles on the US eat-more- as-a-dessert day (Eat on Extra Dessert Day) on September 4th and the day of the dessert (National Dessert Day on October 14th).
The name is derived less from the flavor and the ingredients, but primarily results from the special form of heating used in both cases. Here, the pudding mixture – whether it’s a dessert or meat – is first cooked in a boiling water bath and then turned over in a mold to cool.
And that actually brings us close to the answer why the pudding is actually called pudding. Because before the invention of the aforementioned forms, a napkin ball was used to overturn the pudding mass. This type of preparation – so it is assumed today – is said to have been the template for the Latin name of the pudding: botellus (roughly: the sausage).

While the British variant of the meat pudding is left out at this point, a few words about the vanilla pudding in conclusion. - Halve the vanilla pod lengthways, scrape out the pulp and pour into 350 ml milk, add the scraped out vanilla pod and bring to the boil.
- Mix 150 ml milk, 3 egg yolks, 50 g sugar and 35 g cornstarch well with a whisk. Remove the pod from the milk and stir the starch mixture into the boiling milk, bring to the boil and continue to simmer for about 1-2 minutes while stirring.
- Spread the pudding on 4 dessert bowls, let it cool and serve with fruit, red fruit jelly or chocolate sauce.
