On the first Tuesday in May (not only) the USA celebrates the Poem on Your Pillow Day (Pillow Poetry Day – literally: Poem-on-the-pillow-day). In 2020 , this lyrical day of action will fall on May 5th . The following lines shed light on what this event from the United States is all about and why it deserves its own contribution to the calendar of curious holidays from around the world . What is it about?
Who started Poem on Your Pillow Day?
In contrast to many other contributions from the calendar of literary holidays , the origins and background of the Poem on Your Pillow Day are relatively well documented. The initiative for this American Pillow Poetry Day goes back to the web portal tweetspeakpoetry.com and the year 2015 (see also the list of related links below).
One thing should be made clear on right at the beginning, for use today Poetry should not necessarily the originating also from the United States the day of bad poetry (English. (National) Bad Poetry Day) use on August 18 as inspiration. 😉
When does the United States celebrate Pillow Poetry Day?
Not only because of the similarity of names, but the Poem on Your Pillow Day also has a certain similarity in content to the US poem in Your Pocket Day in April. As already indicated at the beginning, Pillow Poetry Day is also an action day with a flexible date, which since 2015 always falls on the first Tuesday in May. Unfortunately, the initiators do not provide a reason for choosing this date on their website, which is why this probably belongs to the category of relatively arbitrary calendar settings-
So that nobody can complain that he / she did not know anything about it, the following is an overview of all upcoming dates for the Day of Pillow Poetry for the next ten years. In detail, these are the following dates in the calendar:
- 2019: Tuesday, May 7th
- 2020: Tuesday, May 5th
- 2021: Tuesday, May 4th
- 2022: Tuesday, May 3rd

If you still need some intellectual support here, you can also note this occasion as a calendar parallel event to the American Teachers Day (English National Teacher Day) on Tuesday in the first full week of May.
Pillow poetry in practice: what is the best way to celebrate the poem on the pillow day?
This question is easy to answer. Because in principle you only need a pillow (or any other form of pillow) and a written poem. On Pillow Poetry Day, simply put the poem of your choice on the pillow of a friend, guest, child or partner and surprise him/her with it. Whether it is a self-written poem or work of other authors, is up to you (see, inter alia, the contribution of the UNESCO World Poetry English (. World Poetry Day) on 21 March).
In this context, the initiators also recommend that the poem should be read or recited aloud as soon as it has been found. Pillow fights and jumping around in bed are also allowed on today’s day of action. At least as long as the paper with the poem is not damaged. But that goes without saying.
With this in mind: be creative and have a great day of pillow poetry.
