Francis of Assisi and why we celebrate World Animal Day on October 4th

The election of October 4th, which is also the name day of St. Francis of Assisi (1181/82 – 1226), goes back to Heinrich Zimmermann. Don’t you know Then it will be time for the curious holidays on October 4th to remedy the situation.

After all, the good Franz, as he is also known colloquially, according to legend, preached to the birds, converted wild wolves (?!) And generally regarded the fauna of the planet as wanted by God and therefore worthy of protection. So much for the Christian or popular legend, which then also builds the content-related bridge to the actual topic of this article, World Animal Day. Historical fact also remains that Francis of Assisi is considered the founder of the Christian Franciscan order and is venerated as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church (see also the list of related links below).

Although Zimmermann was able to organize the first local event on animal welfare in the Berlin Sports Palace on October 4, 1925, it was still a few years before his idea / demand for his own World Animal Day was implemented internationally.

The history of the creation of World Animal Day

Zimmermann presented his idea from May 12th to 17th, 1929 at the International Animal Welfare Congress, which at that time was meeting in Vienna for the third time. In total, representatives from 152 animal welfare associations from 32 countries took part in this congress and approved a catalog of demands with 23 points.

The last point in this catalog then dealt with Zimmermann’s demand for the introduction of a separate, annual animal welfare day. The final decision was supposed to take two more years, but at its meeting on May 8, 1931 in Florence, the congress decided to celebrate October 4 as World Animal Day.

Since then, World Animal Day, as an annual day of action, has contributed significantly to the spread of animal welfare internationally. Since 1950 then again in the Federal Republic of Germany, from where it started as an idea in 1924, has since been banned by the Nazis (see also Zimmermann’s origins).
