Since 1995, the stands on April 27 World Design Day dedicated to the due form and functional design of everyday objects: – World Communication Design Day and World Graphic Design Day but also (WDD)). Reason enough to tell the story of this day of action with the following lines of the calendar of curious holidays from all over the world . What is it about?
Who started the World Design Day?
The first edition of World Design Day took place on April 27, 1995 under the name World Graphics Day. The idea or initiative goes back to Kim Paulsen. Paulsen developed the concept for this day of action in his function as Vice President of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ico-D), the world umbrella organization for graphic design and visual communication, between 1993 and 1995.
The association, which was founded in London in 1963 and has been based in Montreal since 2005, is the global umbrella organization of independent member associations from 57 different countries. Accordingly, Ico-D is committed to professional employment and issues in the areas of graphic design, visual communication, design management, design promotion and design training worldwide (see also the list of related links below).
Against this background, the association renamed World Graphics 2012 as World Communication Design Day and in 2015 as World Design Day.
Why does World Design Day fall on April 27th?
In fact, Paulsen also provides a justification for the chosen date for World Design Day on April 27th. This is considered a historical reference to the founding of ico-D on April 27, 1963 (see also the list of further links below and the other articles from the calendar of curious birthdays and anniversaries ).
Whether it also linked content for acclaimed parallel on April 27, US Day of Morse code (Engl. National Morse Code Day) or the day of the rib (Engl. National prime rib Day) or the Dutch koningsdag dt (. Kings Day or Day of the King), I could not find out in the course of research for the present article. However, I do not consider such a connection to be particularly likely. 😉
Goals and intention: What is the World Design Day about?
World Design Day is committed to raising public awareness of the value of design and its ability to change the world. To this end, the WDD calls on all designers to think deeply about the well-being of the people in their local environment and to find innovative solutions for local needs. Design in its various forms is intended to be the means to honor diversity to overcome barriers and improve the quality of life (see, inter alia, the contribution to the US Day of the tiles (Engl. National Tile Day) on 23 February or the day of packaging design (engl. National packaging design day) on May 7).
To mark the anniversary of ico-D’s founding on April 27, 1963, participants around the world are invited to gather, innovate and live a moment of design by organizing public events and initiatives on April 27 each year. Against this background, the World Design Day has been setting April 27th under a leitmotif since 2015:
- 2015: How are you designing today?
- 2016: design in action!
- 2017: Start Young
- 2018: Kids can too!
- 2019: Women in design
- 2020: Be Professional!
In this sense: A creative World Design Day to all of you.
