May 3, 2021 in the world
World Press Freedom Day will take place on May 3rd, 2021. Since 1994, the International Day of Press Freedom has been held annually on May 3rd to draw attention to violations of press freedom and the fundamental importance of free reporting for the existence of democracies.
The International Day of Press Freedom was initiated by UNESCO. The UNESCO constitution contains an article that defines the promotion of freedom of the press and freedom of expression as a key objective of the organization. On December 20, 1993, at the suggestion of UNESCO, the UN General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day.
The background to the creation of the day is the declaration of Windhoek. This declaration was adopted on May 3, 1991 at a UN / UNESCO seminar on the promotion of an independent and pluralistic press in Windhoek (Namibia). The central message of the declaration is that free, pluralistic and independent media are an extremely important characteristic of democratic societies. (Source: Wikipedia, License: CC-A / SA)
